Roof Terrace, Geriatric Psychiatry Ward

SAFE OUTDOOR AREA IN LANGEN

Roof terrace for psychiatric patients

For the Asklepios Clinic for Mental Health in Langen, chore created a roughly 120-square-meter rooftop terrace on an existing roof area for the geriatric psychiatry ward.

The new outdoor area is exclusively accessible to patients who are unable to use the clinic’s regular outdoor spaces. This provides, for the first time, safe access to the outdoors directly from the ward level. The project combines the highest safety standards in psychiatry with a deliberately friendly, stimulating design and was implemented over the course of about six months while the clinic remained open.

The rooftop terrace specifically expands the range of therapeutic services by providing a sheltered outdoor space for exercise, socializing, and therapy.

Roof Terrace at the Langen Psychiatric Clinic

Enclosed outdoor area for the psychiatric ward at Langen Clinic

The goal was to create a fully secure rooftop terrace for the psychiatric ward. The focus was on both functional safety and therapeutic utility. A newly designed therapeutic rooftop terrace was built on the existing roof area; it is accessible exclusively from the ward and is clearly separated from the rest of the building.

Space and Use Plan

The design is specifically intended to support therapeutic processes and enhance the quality of the stay. The amenities include:

  • Seating areas and lounge chairs for relaxation and leisure
  • Spaces for group and exercise therapy outdoors
  • Raised beds for use in occupational therapy
  • Spaces for retreat and private encounters

The built-in raised beds facilitate engaging activities: Patients can tend to plants under supervision, which promotes mobility and connects them to familiar everyday experiences.

Specific Challenges and Potential Solutions

Construction in a secure psychiatric unit

01

The work took place within a closed ward. Consequently, the requirements for construction site safety and access control were particularly stringent. All access routes were organized in such a way that no contact between patients and the construction site was possible. Materials and tools had to be completely removed after each shift.

Limited logistics and a tight schedule

Access to the interior was limited, which significantly complicated transportation routes and workflows. At the same time, the tight schedule required precise coordination among all trades and consistent site organization.

Roof Terrace at the Langen Psychiatric Clinic

Modern open-air therapy room

The new rooftop terrace at the Langen Psychiatric Clinic provided an additional, fully-fledged open-air therapy room within a short construction period. All safety-related requirements were strictly adhered to: the fall protection system is impassable, the glazing can withstand heavy loads, and all elements are permanently secured.

At the same time, a deliberate effort was made to create an environment that stands out clearly from traditional enclosed spaces in terms of design. The rooftop terrace offers a friendly, open atmosphere with a high quality of stay.

For the geriatric psychiatry ward, this means a significant expansion of treatment options: exercise, stimulation, and social interaction can now take place safely outdoors.

It was crucial to create an outdoor space that meets the highest safety standards without feeling like a closed-off hospital ward. The rooftop terrace has created a space that facilitates outdoor therapy and noticeably enriches daily life on the ward.
